Yellow Sumatra Kratom is a slow, almost sedative like Kratom strain that comes from the tropical islands of Indonesia.

I’m a big fan and completely biased when it comes to slow relaxing strains but this nice “Kali/Indo” herb has a really special place in my heart, so please keep that in mind as you read this review.

As its nickname of “Sleepy Hippo” suggests, yellow Sumatra is a favorite night time Kratom of Happy Hippo Herbals. If you haven’t had experience with this company, read my Happy Hippo Herbals review; I consider them to have some of the best Kratom on the market.

Yellow Sumatra is perfect for those with anxiety, or anyone who wants to unwind and just needs a nice soothing treat to look forward to at the end of the day. And yes, it’s perfect for sleeping but I’m pretty sure I didn’t need to be Mr. Captain Obvious.

Yellow Sumatra Kratom Review

I still vividly remember the first time I burned Sleepy Hippo. It might honestly be the only strain that caused a very long enjoyable euphoric aroma. It was love at first sight.

I started my day with the usual routine, as the alarm buzzed in the corner somewhere. But this time instead of reaching for my coffee, I reached into a small bag where I keep my stash of Kratom. I fumbled around looking for a new strain to burn, and make my day interesting. Today was the day for this yellow Sumatra.

What is Sumatra Kratom?

Sumatran Kratom originates from Sumatra, a large island in western Indonesia. In fact, it’s the largest island that belongs entirely to Indonesia. The island of Borneo is larger and produces it’s own unique strains, however, Borneo is actually split between Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.

Sumatra strains are definitely unique and typically produce effects on the ‘slow’ side as we’ll cover below. Of course, Kratom strains can also differ based on their vein “color” and that’s no different here. You’ll find White, Green, Yellow and Red Sumatra Kratom.

What is Sundanese Kratom?

Sumatra is just one of the many Sunda islands in Southeast Asia. As such, you will also find strains of Kratom that originate from other islands and areas of the Sunda region and thus sold as Sunda Kratom. Yellow Sunda Kratom is similar to Yellow Sumatra, but they do have their differences and shouldn’t be confused.

Along with Sumatra and Sunda Kratom, you then have Borneo Kratom and Hulu Kratom originating from this region in addition to Indonesian strains that go by the “Indo” Kratom name, so you’d be forgiven for getting a little confused. But after all, Indonesia consists of over 17,000 islands altogether, so that’s sure to bring some variety!

What is Yellow Vein Kratom?

Yellow Kratom is different to the main red, green and white veins because it is not that the leaves are picked when the veins are yellow. Instead, yellow vein Kratom strains are typically achieved by a unique drying and fermentation process, and are often a combination of other Kratom colors mixed together.

This is thought to produce Kratom strains with unique effects, and I won’t be one to argue when it comes to yellow Sumatra Kratom…

My First Time Trying Yellow Sumatran Kratom Powder

Despite receiving a free sample of Sleepy Hippo, I had always set it aside since the name kind of turned me off and I wasn’t planning on going to sleep any time soon. I mostly use Kratom in social situations as a substitute for alcohol or when I’m looking forward to a chill relaxed day.

However, I consider myself a pretty big fan of slow strains so one day I thought I might as well try Yellow Sumatra. It’s now or never. I didn’t buy this stuff so it could just collect dust for an entire year.

I took 3 pills of Magnesium Taurate followed by a burn of 10 grams of Yellow Sumatra.

Yeah I agree that’s a very high amount but I used some judgement based on past experiences. I should probably mention that magnesium taurate plays a huge role in the effectiveness of Kratom and how much it intensifies the aroma. Some people will argue it’s nothing but “bro-science” or just a “placebo” but I always tell those people not to knock it off till’ you try it.

Fast forward 20 minutes later, I was sitting down at the dinner table eating my lunch when it suddenly hit me with flying colors. It came in strong slow waves that began washing over my body, which is very difficult to try and put into words.

It was one of the most blissful serene sensations I have ever felt in my life.

In fact it was so overwhelmingly strong, that if a man with a gun came running at me, I’m pretty sure I’d not have batted an eye.

I never thought I’d say this but the intense calming effects really began getting uncomfortable as I felt my whole body just wanting to drift off. There was that floaty feeling in my head that’d have me spacing out every now and then.

I headed over to the barber shop cracking jokes left and right with all the people that I came in contact with. I was truly at peace. Call me crazy but for a split second it felt like I had everything figured out for the first time in my life. My usual racing worrying mind had completely slowed down to the speed of a three toed sloth.

So this is what it feels like to be in the “moment”? There was no trying, no struggling, just simply existing, and moving from one motion to the next ever so gently.

Now keep in mind, I’m a naturally extroverted guy, but this just amplified my personality by 10 and put my social skills on steroids.

As I sat there getting my haircut, I started nodding in and out of consciousness. Not in a bad way, but in the most pleasant relaxing way you can imagine. I had complete control to float out of consciousness and come right back up if I wanted to.

The aroma literally stayed with me for about 8 hours and finally began winding down at the end of the night. I can honestly say that was the first time one Kratom dose lasted me almost an entire day.

Yellow Sumatra Effects

Having told you my crazy first time personal experience, you probably would be expecting something similar too.

Will it happen to you too? I don’t know. Maybe, maybe not.

I have used Sleepy Hippo numerous times after that experience and I have never came close to that level of aroma as I did during my first experience with this strain. The fact I burned a really high dose along with magnesium taurate pills is what most probably intensified it.

Here’s what I do know:

  • Sleepy Hippo is Sumatran Kratom which is a slow strain and, like most slow strains, it provides a nice slow soothing experience. The mellow sedative experience is what makes slow strains one of my favorite and which is also one of the reasons it melts my heart just thinking about it.
  • Burning low doses of Yellow Sumatra is not as noticeable where as the larger doses is where you start to experience the beautiful moments this herb has to offer. The larger the dose the more sedating and relaxed you get.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Sleepy hippo can some times cause an inverse reaction in some people and actually act as a fast strain? It’s very rare but it happens. Just thought I should let you know, so you don’t go on an online rampage saying that Kratom IQ didn’t warn you.

Yellow Sumatra Dosage

The dosage all depends on how fresh your receptors are. If you haven’t burned any Kratom for a while then the “lower” doses will still hit you with a pretty nice aroma.

The lower dose is usually 1-4 grams. A dose I’d personally recommend is 5-7 grams to get the nice relaxing feelings you’ll hear any Kratom user talk about.

Keep in mind this dose recommendation is only for “Sleepy Hippo” and not other strains. Then again it all comes down to experimentation and you respond to it. Everybody is different.

I personally have never really dealt with nausea when it comes to Kratom while some people such as my friend can’t tolerate burning high doses of any Kratom strain. So make sure you understand your body and how it reacts to the plant.

Sleepy Hippo (Yellow Sumatra) powderIf you are prone to Kratom nausea, then have no fear. There are ways to burn Kratom for those who are faint at heart. Sleepy Hippo can definitely be used in social settings and any other “relaxing” atmosphere. It’s a “laid back” strain. I’d personally never use it when going to a night club or a place where high amounts of energy is required such as the gym.

Last thing I want to do after taking this strain is work out. I rather sit on a couch somewhere, listen to music, and make fun of my friends.

You can definitely spread out your dose to a couple of small doses during the day to remain in a more relaxed vibe without coming down with a full on soporific effect.

Concluding Thoughts…

So at the end of the day, Sleepy Hippo is an awesome yellow Sumatran Kratom strain that you should definitely add to your arsenal.

Great for relaxation, great for anxiety, useful in social situations, and of course perfect for sleep. It’s a versatile strain that provides multiple benefits along with a unique aroma compared to most other Kratom strains.

All in all I’d give it a rating of 4.5/5. The reason I didn’t give it a full 5/5 is that it sometimes has a tendency to make you feel “drowsy” or “spaced out” at the higher doses.

Try it out and let us know what you think!
